Administrative / biographical background:

Opened in 1846 at Chapel Street by the Wesleyan Association, which became part of the United Methodist Free Churches in 1857, and of the United Methodist Church in 1907. Rebuilt in 1875. Closed in 1956 due to subsidence damage, although services continued in temporary premises until 1974.
